Neon Genesis Evangelion
Neon Genesis Evangelion, also known simply as Evangelion, is an anime created in 1995 by Gainax and directed by Hideaki Anno. Evangelion was received really well, both by fans and critics, and it is still considered one of the best anime ever made.
Together with the release of the anime, it was also made a manga adaptation under the overview of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who worked as character designer on the animated series. The manga however, differs from the anime in regards of many aspects, such as the story, character’s personality and interaction between characters.
The story of Evangelion revolves around NERV, a military organization created to fight against mysterious beings called Angels. NERV takes care of localizing Angels and battle them with the use of particular weapons known as Evangelions (EVA for short). Evangelions look like big robots and they can only be piloted by a selected teenagers, the Children.
Asuka Sohryu Langley
Asuka is first introduced in episode eight and it is immediately clear how much she (apparently) differs from the other pilots. She is smart, exuberant, aggressive to anyone who dares to contradict her. She is very proud of being a Children, fighting against the Angels is a way to show what a great pilot she is. But the real Asuka is far from the Asuka everybody sees.
When Asuka was a child both her parents worked for NERV and had very little time to dedicate to their daughter. After a failed experiment, Asuka’s mother went insane and was placed in a psychiatric yard. There she began to treat a doll as if it was her real daughter, not a very long time after she committed suicide. Asuka herself was the one who found the body. Since then she strived to be strong and succeed in everything.
Having named my domain after Asuka I guess it is quite obvious that I really like her. Sometimes she is overbearing and well…I might even say bitchy. Yet, I love her strength and determination, and admire how hard she works to reach her aim.
Shinji Ikari
Yet another complex teenager! Unlike Asuka, he is introverted, not very sociable and insecure about his mission. While Asuka fights Angels without thinking twice, Shinji wonders who they are, why they are attacking them and so on.
The hedgehog dilemma, with this words Ritsuko Akagi defines Shinji. He is scared to hurt others, but at the same time to be hurt by others. This fear is at the base of Shinji’s behaviour; Asuka wears the proud girl mask, whereas Shinji wears the mediocre boy mask. As the series proceeds the true nature of the characters is shown: Asuka is as secure as she would like to be and Shinji proves that he is determined and intelligent.
And even if Shinji sometimes seems to be cold and indifferent, he is actually a really caring and sensitive person.
