While Light meets a tragic end, Death Note Relight may give a lead about what happened to him after he died. In the special an Unnamed Shinigami pays a visit to Ryuk and bribes him. In exchange of some apples, this new god of death wants to know from Ryuk how can he reach the passage that leads into the human world.

It has been assumed that this new death god could actually be a reincarnation of Light due to a series of clues:

  1. To reach the place where Ryuk is, the death god walks up a flight of stars and enters a bright flash of light at the top of the stairs. This could echo Light’s death, because when he died he was lying on the first steps of a staircase.
  2. This new death god hasn’t met Ryuk before, but he knows his love for apples without having to ask the other death gods.
  3. When giving Ryuk an apple, he tosses it in the very same way Light did.
  4. After the Unnamed Shinigami leaves, Ryuk says “Light”.
  5. The new death god leaves before Ryuk has finished to tell Light’s story. Something logical if he is Light, because he already knows how the story ends.
  6. Apparently all the death gods know how to reach the human world, even if not all them go there. This Unnamed Shinigami instead, doesn’t know much about the passage.
  7. Toward the end of the second opening, Light is shown standing in the Shinigami Realm.
  8. The episode title is Relight, which could be easily seen as re-Light: Light’s return.

Clothing- and physical-wise there are other interesting similarities:

  1. The coat Light was wearing the night he died is very similar to the one worn by the death god.
  2. The red tie wrapped around the death god’s head could be the red tie of Light’s school uniform.
  3. During the first arch, Light usually sported a beige messenger bag, which is very similar to the bag carried by the death god.
  4. In many artworks Light carries a scythe, the Unnamed Shinigami also carries one.
  5. Light’s “Kira smile” has the same shape of the death god’s mouth.
  6. Throughout the anime, Light was shown with red eyes as a way to highlight his death god personality, even though he never made the eye trade.
  7. While going up the stairs, the Unnamed Shinigami walks unevenly. Similarly, Light limped out of the warehouse shortly before dying1.
