Kira

Kira, the alias used to identify Light, is soon extended to any person who owns, or only uses, a Death Note. Since Light is linked to each Kira, here is an analysis of his interactions with Misa, Higuchi, Teru and Kiyomi.

Misa Amane

Misa Amane

Alias: Second Kira
Death: committed suicide after Light’s death
Death Eyes: yes; made the first trade with Rem, then made a second trade with Ryuk
Trivia: attempted to commit suicide (while in confinement), committed suicide (implied in the anime), comes in contact with the Third and Fifth Kira

Among the victims of Kira is a thief who had killed Misa’s parents when she was younger. Misa witnessed multiple delays in the criminal’s trial, so when Kira killed him she saw him as an hero.

Initially, Misa only wanted to meet Kira and thank him for having punished the man who murdered her parents. However, when she sets up a meeting and sees Light in Aoyama, she immediately fells in love with him. Shortly after discovering Light’s address she goes to his house and Light is somewhat forced to tell her he will be his boyfriend. Even if he tries to make her understand the police suspects him of being Kira, Misa doesn’t follow Light’s orders and ends up being caught. It is at this point that Light has to prepare a plan to free Misa and, at the same time, erase all the suspicions L has on both Misa and him by bringing the Third Kira into the picture.

Kyosuke Higuchi

Kyosuke Higuchi

Alias: Third Kira
Death: killed by Light to gain ownership of his Death Note shortly before he could have been taken in custody
Death Eyes: yes; made the trade shortly before being arrested
Trivia: attempted to commit suicide, comes in contact with the Second Kira

In order to lift doubts on both Misa and Light from being respectively the second and first Kira, Light devises a complex plan of which Higuchi is an important piece. While under arrest, Light needs to have someone who will pass judgements on criminals otherwise L will continue to think he is guilty. Light didn’t chose Higuchi but gave Rem, whose notebook was going to be used by this new Kira, a breakdown of his traits so that she could pick someone who would certainly use the Death Note:

Light: Rem, give that note to a person who is reasonably high in an organisation’s ladder, and with a greed for promotion and mind to use the Death Note to fulfil it. [volume 7, chapter 54, page 6]

Aside from the criminals Higuchi killed shortly after receiving the Death Note (the ones Light couldn’t kill because he was under arrest), his victims are very different from Light’s. Higuchi, along with the other Yotsuba members, picks people who can damage their own business. Although he believes that “Kira is now an existence that the world needs”, he doesn’t seem to grasp the criteria Light used leading him to give away he isn’t the First, nor the Second, Kira.
