Why Light?

Because I like good-looking clever bad boys! Now seriously speaking, although he is a pretty boy that’s not the (only) reason that made me like him. If I like a character, I normally find him/her interesting as soon as I see them…even if they don’t say much or don’t say anything at all (like Sawyer from Lost or Sark in Alias) and that is what happened with Light. Good-looks aside, that bored school-boy had something that caught my attention right from the manga opening and so it was for the rest of the series. Some people appreciate Light only when he is in Kira mode, others when he returns to be his old self (after renouncing his ownership)…I personally like him either way because both Lights are interesting: Kira Light definitely shows his cleverness in the way he brilliantly plots his moves even when equally clever detectives (along with a good deal of policemen) are chasing him, normal Light instead is the classic hero with the desire to capture evildoers. Probably this duality is one of the elements I enjoy more about Light; that good boy gone bad, then back at being good then bad again.

Another element lies is what Light accomplished, something which seemed to be difficult to do and to accept: punish criminals to create a better world. Death Note opens showing a world which is rotting, a world that became inundated with crime and, apparently, without hope. Yet, Light changed that a world and in a matter of years Kira went from being considered a mass-murderer to being world-wide embraced and recognised in a positive way. Light managed to do the impossible and even though his “kingdom” didn’t last, the mark he left was so big even his last antagonist, Near, admitted that what Light made was quite something.

History

Ab Intra was created for Amassment‘s villains shrine marathon, held during the months of November, December and January. “Evil” characters have always interested me and I quickly signed-up to participate not a long time after I saw the post. Unfortunately real life (read: university exams) stepped in the way so I had to leave out from the final version many pages, which I had drafted but didn’t have the time to complete.

Albeit the amount of content currently available may not give away much about this shrine’s direction, Ab Intra is going to be an analysis-centred tribute. Since I do own the original DVD’s though, I will probably put up a media section with screencaps (together with other media-related things).

Name

When I had to pick a title, I wanted to choose something that could define Light both pre- and post-Death Note. “Ab intra” is Latin for “from the insied”, which I found very fitting to describe that drive Light has, in particular to bring forward justice. The pre-Death Note Light collaborated with the police many times and Light’s dream was to follow his father’s foot-steps and pursue a career in the police force, while the post-Death Note Light put the realisation of his utopia before anything else.
