Physical

A peculiar element of Asuka and Shinji’s relationship are their physical contacts. They hardly have this type of contact with other characters, besides, physical contact in Evangelion is difficult to find in general. Some of these situations may have been analysed in the section as well, but I preferred to single them out and put them together on one page.

Episode 8

  • Before being fully introduced to Shinji, Asuka slaps him because a gust of wind made her skirt go up, revealing her knickers.
  • Asuka grabs Shinji’s arm and drags him while looking for a place to change clothes.
  • During the battle, Asuka and Shinji are very close to each other, so much that Asuka calls him a pervert. During the final stage of the fight, Asuka puts her hands on Shinji’s to help him pilot Unit 02.

Episode 9

  • At this point Asuka have known Shinji for a few days. Yet she is confident enough to tap his forehead since he didn’t return her greeting enthusiastically.
  • In order to defeat the ninth Angel, Asuka and Shinji need to work on their synchronization skills. Even if there isn’t a direct contact during the exercises (except when Asuka kicks Shinji), they happen to be close to each other in many occasions. Opening the door,
    brushing their teeth, reviewing the plan just to name a few.
  • When it comes to sleep it’s impossible not to mention when Asuka ends up in Shinji’s bed. After an initial embarrass, Shinji tries to kiss her, but stops when Asuka calls her mom.

  • When Asuka starts to frantically search something in her bag, Shinji asks her was she’s doing. When she replies she gets really close to him.
  • While crawling in a small air duct, Asuka orders Shinji not to look forward. When he accidentally defies her order, he is quickly swamped by a series of kicks.
  • Upon coming out of another duct, Asuka falls over Shinji.
  • After defeating the Angel, Asuka falls over Shinji.

Episode 15

  • Asuka and Shinji are home alone. Misato is at a party with Ritsuko and Kaji so she’ll spend the night out. Asuka decides to kiss Shinji “to kill time”, or so she says…
