A Meeting

Misato has just began to introduce Asuka to Shinji, Kensuke and Toji when a gust of wind lifts her dress revealing her knickers. After slapping the three boys, Asuka asks Misato which one is the Third Children. Asuka is less than impressed…Shinji doesn’t to be seem the great pilot she has heard of and he is quickly dismissed by saying he is rather dull. It doesn’t seem like a good start, doesn’t it?

Things don’t get better when Misato, the boys, Asuka and Kaji are reunited to have dinner. Kaji ignores Asuka by flirting with Misato first and praising Shinji after. In spite of her silence, both Kaji’s activities annoy Asuka.

When she is alone with Kaji, she remarks her first impression of Shinji: a dull boy that didn’t deserve to be chosen as a Children. Kaji reminds her that during his first battle, his synchro-rate was 40%. Stunned, Asuka goes to fetch Shinji in order to make clear who is the best. Shinji is taken where Unit 02, Asuka’s pride and joy, is located. To her dismay, Shinji isn’t impressed by the characteristics of her Unit nor he gives importance to Asuka’s attempts to belittle him i.

The appearance of an Angel gives Asuka another possibility to concretely show him her ability. She drags Shinji around the ship without allowing him to advise Misato and ask for her permission.

Asuka looks for a spot where she can wear her plug suit. Eventually, she finds a suitable place under a flight of stairs. In the meanwhile Shinji waits for her. After he peeks to see if she is ready, she yells at him: “Don’t peep you jerk! Why are boys such perverted idiots?!”.

They return to where Unit 02 is anchored and Shinji is forced not only to follow Asuka, but also to wear a matching plug-suit. Notably this is the first scene, though certainly not the last, in which Asuka utters her trademark phrase i. Still, Asuka’s plan to shine is jeopardized once again.

Since she has no idea on how to defeat the Angel, Shinji takes command of Unit 02. Enraged, Asuka tries to move him away from the control panel using every mean she can think of (including pushing, banging on his head and pulling his hair). She also takes the chance to call him a pervert a second time for being too close to her. After realising it isn’t the best situation to quarrel, she finally decides to help Shinji and, thanks to their joined efforts, they manage to defeat the Angel.

Asuka’s début was a total disaster; her precious Evangelion was taken over by a dull boy, with whom she even had to collaborate. She wasn’t able to show her skills, hence to establish her superiority over Shinji. On his part, Shinji was bossed around by Asuka for the most part of the day, something which hardly gave him a positive impression of her.
