The first mission is just around the corner. While in Kaipo, Cecil discovers that his girlfriend Rosa is there as well, stricken with high fever. Since the only medicine is an object called Sand Pearl, the duo sets out to fetch it. What seems to be a mini-adventure, will lead Rydia not only to meet new people and make friends, but also be a part of something very big; saving the world from Golbez’s domain.
During this first part of their journey, two new characters join Cecil and Rydia: Tellah and Edward. Same as Rydia and Cecil, the sage Tellah is going through the Underground Waterway. He is directed to Damcyan, the castle where the bard Edward Chris von Muir has taken his daughter, Anna.
The trio manages to reach Damcyan, but it is too late; the Red Wings have already attacked the castle and stolen the Crystal of Fire. Anna is lying wounded and Tellah puts the blame on Edward, the prince of the kingdom. The two get into a fight which is stopped by Anna’s intervention. After Anna’s death, Tellah leaves the party in order to pursue revenge by himself. Edward instead has the opposite reaction, with the death of his loved one, he bursts into tears.
Rydia and Tellah. Born in the city of Mysidia, Tellah was a famed mage. However regular magic, as summon magic, has its boundaries. The day Tellah used a spell beyond his power many mages were injured so he had to leave Mysidia and move somewhere far away. In Kaipo he lived as an ordinary person and slowly forgot most of the spells he had learned.
Even though Tellah does not stay in the party for a very long time, he is the first teacher-like figure for Rydia (the second one being Rosa). Rydia admires Tellah for the strength, courage and determination he shows when the party is having an hard time or is under pressure. While he might not be as good as he was in his younger days, Tellah is still a gifted wizard and servers as an example for the young Rydia. He also notices that Rydia comes from Mist and that, despite her age, she is a very powerful summoner.
Another way to look at the relationship between Tellah and Rydia is given by a dialogue between Tellah and Cecil. When Tellah joins the party he confesses Cecil that Rydia looks a lot like his daughter. This probably leads Tellah to look at Rydia with a mix of affection and nostalgia, especially because Anna is now an adult and has left him for the spoony bard, ahem…Edward.
