Lenne plays an important part in relation to Shuyin. Actually she is the reason Shuyin does whatever he does. If it wasn’t for Lenne and for the strong feeling Shuyin has for her there would not be Final Fantasy X-2 so a page completely dedicated to Shuyin’s big love is somewhat compulsory.

Both Shuyin and Lenne were really popular at their time and it’s thanks to their shared fame that they met. Shuyin was a famous blitzball player while Lenne was a famous singer. Although the game isn’t explicit in this regard, their love story was probably well known to Zanarkand’s people. Much like celebrities nowadays, Lenne and Shuyin relationship was a public affair, which explains why Maechen, your average Lenne fan, knows so much about them and their tragic story.

Lenne was also a skilled summoner so it’s possible that Shuyin was her Guardian, much like Tidus was for Yuna. Shuyin certainly didn’t take this role lightly and he went to great lengths to protect her. Once the war between Zanarkand and Bevelle broke out, Shuyin knew that Lenne was going to be sent to the lines therefore he came up with his crazy plan to use Vegnagun in order to save her from a certain death.

As a couple, Shuyin and Lenne are the textbook definition of complementary. Shuyin, a warrior represent the physical aspect while Lenne, a summoner, represent the spiritual aspect. Shuyin’s impulsive behaviour and black or white way of thinking was perfectly balanced by Lenne’s calm and reasoned approach to life. Lenne needed Shuyin to be protected and Shuyin needed Lenne to avoid acting without forethought. Being apart from Lenne doesn’t do any good to Shuyin, actually it brings him to the fringe of madness. His extreme actions clearly shows how their separation damaged him.

On the other hand, the game also shows how positive Lenne’s influence can be over Shuyin. Think about the Vegnagun scene: a simple request made by her was enough to make Shuyin give up his plan. The thought of Lenne was the only thing that allowed Shuyin’s spirit to survive after their deaths, to drive him to look for Lenne even as decades went by.

It’s undeniable that Lenne and Shuyin love was a true one, and even though they had to wait a thousand years to see each other again, at the end they were able to find that happiness they couldn’t find while they were alive.
