Name
First of all a clarification: before the North American release of Final Fantasy X-2, Shuyin’s name was シューイン. That name becomes spelled {Shuin} or rather {Shuuin} due to the {ー} which lengthens a vowel’s sound. Even though {Shuin} became Shuyin in the new release, that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. {Shuin} is the straight romanization of his name in Katakana, its spelling was probably changed for the English audience so that it would be easier for them to pronounce it. As I’ve said before, the correct transliteration of シューイン is Shuuin, instead of using two {u} it’s better to replace the second {u} with an {y}.
In the Japanese version of Final Fantasy X-2 Shuyin’s name is spelled in Katakana, the alphabet normally used for non-Japanese names. However, the Kanji version is pretty interesting. In Kanji Shuyin would be 主因, analysing further the two ideograms we have that:
- 主 (シュ) means: lord, chief, master, main thing, principal
- 因 (イン) means: cause, factor, be associated with, depend on, be limited to
Shuyin’s name perfectly fit his role in the game. Being the game’s main antagonist, he is the principal element of the story. He is the cause of everything wrong that happens, the person behind the chaos that’s spreading on Spira. Without Shuyin, Yu-Ri-Pa’s mission wouldn’t exist – even if it starts as Yuna’s quest for Tidus, it later became more about stopping Shuyin’s plan.
And now the super common analysis from you know where. (Believe me, I tried not to refer to the overused Kabalarians but they were the only site providing an analysis of Shuyin’s name). All the notes that fit Shuyin have been highlighted.
While the name Shuyin creates the urge to be self-expressive and sociable, without a properly balanced last name, it causes a argumentative, impulsive and intolerant expression. This name, when combined with the last name, can frustrate happiness, contentment, and success, as well as cause health weaknesses in the liver, bloodstream, worry, and mental tension. The name of Shuyin creates a happy, versatile, and expressive nature, with good business judgement and a fine sense of responsibility, which should enable you to establish congenial relationships in positions of trust where you are dealing with the public. You have a clever, quick mind, with the ability to accomplish a great deal in a short period of time, although it is not easy for you to systematize your efforts. This name could allow expression along musical and artistic lines and gives you the desire to entertain and to meet and mix with people of refinement and culture.
Particularly worth mentioning are the musical skills. Indeed, when using Vegnagun, Shuyin looks like he is playing an organ. Also the fact you have to solve musical quizzes before reaching Vegnagun could be a further proof of the importance music holds. Other true statements are the impulsive nature and the cleaver mind since Shuyin, after all, managed to reach Vegnagun twice in spite of the high numbers of soldiers guarding it. Regarding the “ability to accomplish a great deal[…]” it depends. Shuyin managed to reunite with Lenne, however I wouldn’t consider 1000 years “a short period of time”.
