Preparation
The first time I fought Vegnagun and Shuyin I had all my characters at level 99 (ahem…over train much?). The second time Yuna was at level 58, Rikku at level 59 and Paine at level 60. Actually I didn’t train my characters so much because of Vegnagun, but because I wanted to complete Bevelle’s 100 dungeon and I needed high levelled characters. Anyway, since Vegnagun is not an hard boss I’d say that even if you are around level 55 you should be able to defeat it without problems. If you want to attempt the fight at a lower level it’s better to equip accessories that raise Max HP by 40% or even 60%.
Strategy 1: Mascot for all
Yuna used Moogle Curaja to heal the party and Moogle Regenja (casts both Haste and Regen). While Yuna focused on healing, Rikku and Paine attacked using, respectively, the physical attack and Cactling Gun. Both these attacks are very strong, but they also require a high amount of MP (80 each) so Yuna was also used to restore their MP. As with accessories I gave Pain the Invincible and Yuna the Ragnarock.
Strategy 2: Alchemist + Dark Knight/Warrior/Samurai
Yuna was again the healer. She used the ability Mega Phoenix and the Mix command according to what was needed. Keep in mind that combos created with Mix aren’t limited to healing so if the party is in good health, defence can be dropped for offence. Paine and Rikku were usually equipped with the Dark Knight Dressphere or alternatively any other heavy Dressphere.
A note on the Mascot Dressphere
The Mascot Dressphere can only be obtained after completing Chapter 5. If you decide to get it, I’d suggest equipping it and learn a few abilities. All the Mascot Dresspheres can learn the ability Ribbon, which has the same effect of the item Ribbon, plus each of them has many useful attacks. It does take time to learn all the abilities: 1399 total AP for Pain and 1599 AP for Yuna and Rikku (the aforementioned Ribbon ability alone requires 999 AP), but it is the most powerful dressphere available and if you have the patience to master it, it really pays off. Another thing to notice is that this dressphere can be even more powerful if you have mastered other dresspheres. These extra dresspheres change from character to character; Warrior and Dark Knight for Yuna, Berseker and White Mage for Rikku, Samurai and Black Mage for Paine. So for example if Yuna learns all the abilities of the Warrior Dressphere she can use them when she wears the Mascot Dressphere.
Obviously if you decide to fight Vegnagun before completing all of Chapter 5 or if you don’t get “Episode Complete”, you won’t have the possibility to use this dressphere. However you should have the Dark Knight, Samurai and Warrior Dresspheres to attack and the Alchemist or White Mage Dresspheres to cure your party. Other handy dresspheres are Thief, if you want to steal items and for the ability Pilfer Gil, and Lady Luck to gain double EXP at the end of battles, although I didn’t personally use it since my party level was already high.
